PRACTICAL NOTES
Build a résumé for one real application
How to approach it
Start with the job description and select the experience that answers it. Use a clear role title, recent contact details and dates. For each project, describe what you did and an outcome you can substantiate. Preview the PDF after changing templates; page breaks can change with longer text.
A concrete example
Instead of “Responsible for social media”, write a factual description such as “Planned the weekly posting calendar and prepared product photographs.” Add a metric only if you can support it. An academic project is useful when it demonstrates the skills the role needs.
Before you use the result
No template guarantees an ATS score, interview or hiring result. Check the exported PDF for selectable text, correct links and readable spacing. Follow the employer’s requested file type. Your draft stays in this browser until you clear it or clear site data; download a PDF to keep a separate copy.
Before submitting, open the saved PDF in a separate viewer instead of relying only on the live preview. Check that your email address and phone number are correct, dates run in a sensible order, and links point to the right profile or portfolio. Zoom out to inspect page breaks, then zoom in to catch clipped text. If the application specifically asks for a Word document, follow that instruction; this builder's browser workflow saves a PDF. Keep the filename simple, such as your-name-resume.pdf, so a recruiter can identify it. Use a role title that truthfully describes your experience, and spell out abbreviations a reader outside your team may not know. Ask someone unfamiliar with your project to read one highlight; if they cannot tell what you contributed, add the missing context before you send the file.

CHOOSING A TEMPLATE
Which résumé layout should you choose?
When a person will read it first
Modern keeps everything in one column but gives your name a coloured header. It suits a general application when you want a little visual character. Classic uses centred details and serif type for a more traditional look. Creative Sidebar gives projects and skills their own visual space; consider it for a portfolio-led role when you know a person will review the file. Check that the sidebar still reads clearly on a phone and in the exported PDF.
When you upload to a hiring portal
ATS Minimal and ATS Professional put the main sections in a single text column with familiar headings. For a first internship or an engineering role submitted through an online form, either is a sensible starting point. Minimal is plain; Professional adds subtle rules. These layouts are designed to be easier to read, but no template can promise how every employer's system will parse a PDF. After saving, select and copy a few lines from the PDF to check their order.
WRITING THE DETAILS
Turn duties into evidence
A useful highlight answers three questions: what did you do, how did you do it, and what changed? Start with a direct verb, name the work, then add a result you can explain in an interview. Enter each highlight on its own line in the Experience, Internship or Projects section. If you have a reliable number, include it; if you do not, describe the outcome without inventing one.
Examples you can adapt
- Software project: “Built a script to compare daily order exports and flag missing IDs before the report was sent.”
- Student internship: “Reproduced a checkout error and documented steps the engineering team could use to retest the fix.”
- Sales or operations: “Updated the lead tracker after each call so the next follow-up had an owner and due date.”
Make the claim yours
These are examples, not ready-made claims. Replace the task and result with your own work. If you contributed to a team project, say what part you handled. Read the preview at normal size: short, specific lines are easier to scan than a paragraph of duties. Remove a weak bullet before shrinking the font just to fit another page.
